We are currently looking for a Flower Farm Assistant to start in March 2025. See details below:
Flower Farm Assistant
This role is to assist Lisa in the running of her small flower farm business with big ideas. It is a part-time position of 24 hours a week year round with closer to full-time hours in the summer months As we are a new and small business you will be helping across all areas of the business: all growing and harvesting aspects of cut flower production, simple floristry and bunching of flowers, processing of online orders and some simple admin/email tasks. You will also be required to make local deliveries by car. This is a really varied role, where you will get the opportunity to come to work in a beautiful site and support me as we grow the business together.
The role
Growing/field work
- Sowing of seeds, transplanting, planting out of bulbs and plants.
- Preparing the beds – mulching, weeding, fertilising.
- Cultivating the beds – weeding, dead heading, pruning, netting, watering.
- Harvesting of flowers in a timely manner, whilst ensuring crops are cut in the appropriate state.
Floristry
- Bunching of flowers for sale at wholesale and our retail outlets.
- Creation of gift bouquets for online and local sales.
- Delivery of flowers to local wholesalers.
- Upkeep of our flower sheds (we are due to expand and have more of these in surrounding villages).
Admin
- Processing and packaging of online orders
- Customer service on email relating to online sales, PYO and workshops.
- Recording of flower production i.e. keeping a daily record of what flowers are cut.
Miscellaneous
- Assisting Lisa with other areas of running a small business on an ad-hoc basis: social media, marketing, development of new ideas.
Skills and attributes
- Hardworking, self-motivated person, that can work alongside others and on their own.
- Fast learner who is keen to learn as much as they can about the flowers that we grow and how we sell them.
- Positive and fun attitude. This is a beautiful site to work on and I am a friendly and approachable person to work for, but we work hard on the field and in all weathers. I am looking for someone who is happy working in all conditions and can keep smiling!
- Adaptable person who can accept that daily duties may change due to weather/demands of the business that week.
- Ability to lift heavy items, work on your knees, stand, bend etc. for long periods of time. This can be a physically demanding job.
- Valid UK driving licence and reliable car for small local deliveries.
- Excellent time keeping skills. During the summer months we sometimes have small windows of time to harvest so starting on time is essential.
- Tidy person who can help maintain order and organisation on the field and work in a methodical way.
- Enthusiastic about flowers and spreading the joy they bring to our customers.
The regular hours will be 24 hours a week, Tuesday-Friday. However, once the flowers arrive (from April), you will be required to work Saturdays in addition to this to help stock up our flower sheds and also help run PYO/workshops (additional 6-8 hours a week). Please note that on Fridays you will be working on your own on the field. Hours will vary from starting at 8/9am and finishing at 2/3pm. In the summer, we sometimes need to start earlier due to hot weather.
You will be paid the minimum wage and receive 28 days holiday pro rata based on the 24 hour week.
Perks
- Free flowers
- Be surrounded by flowers every day.
- Opportunity to learn all about cut flowers
- Work in beautiful surroundings
- Small business looking to expand so this is a great opportunity to grow with the business
As we are a seasonal business and our busiest months are June-September, this position is not suitable for anyone who would like to take holiday during this period. We encourage holiday to be taken in the quieter months.
You will be required to make local deliveries by car so a driving licence and a reliable car will be required. You will be reimbursed for your mileage based on the HMRC recommended rate of 45p per mile.
